A good leather travel bag can last for years of trips, from a weekend in Cox’s Bazar to Eid travel back to your home district. A poor one starts peeling, tearing at the handles or losing its shape after a few journeys. The difference is rarely obvious in a product photo.
This guide explains the main types of leather travel bag, how to choose the right size, what to check before you buy, what they cost in Bangladesh and how to look after one in our climate.
Quick answer
For most people, a leather duffle or weekender of around 40 to 50 litres covers trips of two to four days. Check the handle joins, the base, the zip and the lining before you pay. A genuine leather travel bag from a Bangladeshi seller usually costs between ৳5,000 and ৳12,000. A “leather” duffle under ৳2,000 is almost always PU or another synthetic.
Types of leather travel bag
The names overlap, and shops use them loosely, but these are the three styles you’ll see most often.

Duffle bag
A duffle is a soft, tube-shaped bag with two carry handles and usually a detachable shoulder strap. It opens along the top with one long zip. Duffles are easy to pack because the main space is one open compartment, and they squash into bus racks and car boots without much trouble.
Weekender
A weekender is close to a duffle but usually has a flatter base, a more structured shape and a few inside pockets. It looks a little smarter, which makes it a good pick if you travel for work or family events and want the bag to look neat in a hotel lobby or at a relative’s home.
Holdall
A holdall is the larger, sturdier version. It often has a stiff base, side pockets and sometimes a separate shoe or laundry section. It suits longer trips, but a full leather holdall gets heavy, so it is better for car travel than for carrying long distances.
Some sellers also offer leather backpacks that open like a travel bag. These are useful if you walk a lot between transport, though they hold less than a duffle.
Size by trip length
Leather is heavier than nylon or canvas, so buying bigger than you need means carrying extra weight on every trip. Use the length of your usual trip as the guide.
| Trip length | Suggested size | Typical style |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight or one day | 25 to 35 litres | Small duffle or leather backpack |
| Two to four days | 40 to 50 litres | Duffle or weekender |
| Five days or more | 55 litres and up | Holdall, or a weekender with a suitcase |
If you fly, check your airline’s cabin bag limits before buying, because they vary between airlines. A soft leather duffle is easier to fit into a cabin rack than a hard case.
What to check before you buy
A travel bag carries more weight than any other leather bag you own, so small weaknesses show up fast. These are the parts that fail first.

Handles and handle joins. The handles take the full weight of the bag every time you lift it. Look for handles that are stitched through several layers of leather and reinforced where they meet the body, often with rivets or a leather patch. A handle joined with a single row of stitching is a warning sign.
The base. The bottom of the bag sits on floors, platforms and car boots. A thicker leather base, a stiff insert or small metal feet protect it from wear and keep it from sagging when full.
The zip. A travel bag zip opens and closes under strain. A heavy metal zip that runs smoothly the full length of the bag is worth paying for. Check that the zip pulls are solid and not thin stamped metal.
The shoulder strap. If the bag has a strap, check the clips and D-rings. Solid metal hardware holds up. Light plated clips can snap with a full load.
The lining. A strong fabric lining protects the inside of the leather and stops things snagging. Look inside the bag as well as outside, because poor stitching often hides in the lining seams.
The material line. Read what the listing actually says. Words like “PU”, “synthetic”, “leatherette” or “vegan leather” mean it is not real leather. Our guide on how to identify real leather shows how to check the bag yourself, and PU leather vs genuine leather explains the difference in detail.
Leather travel bag prices in Bangladesh
The prices below come from listings on Bangladeshi shops in November 2026. They are listed prices, and stock and discounts change often, so use them as a guide.
| Bag | Material on the listing | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| SSB Leather Classic Travel Bag SB-TB305 | Cow leather | ৳7,499 (out of stock when checked) |
| Craftsman Leather Duffle Bag | “Napa leather” | ৳11,995 |
| The Patchee Men’s Large Capacity Leather Travel Duffle | “Leather” (grade not stated) | ৳5,074 |
| Shainpur leather backpack travel bag | Genuine leather | ৳4,999 (listed as unavailable) |
| The Patchee PU leather duffles | PU (synthetic) | ৳2,413 to ৳2,584 |
| Suchishoili leather duffle bag | “Leather” (no details given) | ৳1,440 |
Three things stand out. First, genuine leather travel bags from known sellers start at around ৳5,000 and go above ৳12,000 for larger or better finished bags. Second, synthetic duffles cost roughly half that, and some look very similar in photos. Third, a “leather” duffle at ৳1,440 is far below what the leather alone would cost for a bag that size, so it needs a close check before you trust the label.
If a listing only says “leather” with no grade, ask the seller whether it is full grain, top grain or split leather. For an explanation of the grades and what they mean for price, see our guide on leather bag prices in Bangladesh and types of leather.
Care on the road
Travel is hard on leather. Rain, dust, heat and long hours packed in a hot car boot all take their toll. A few simple habits keep the bag in good shape.

Rain. Leather handles light rain, but soaking it is another matter. Wipe off water as soon as you can and let the bag dry naturally at room temperature. Never dry it in direct sun or next to a heater, because fast drying makes leather stiff and can crack it.
Humidity and mould. Bangladesh’s monsoon is the biggest risk for any leather bag. After a trip, empty the bag fully and leave it open for a day so moisture can escape. Store it somewhere with air flow, not sealed in a plastic cover. Our guide to leather care in Bangladesh explains how to stop mould before it starts.
Packing. Don’t overfill the bag. Stretching the leather to force the zip closed puts strain on the seams and the zip at the same time. Pack liquids in a separate pouch, because a leaking bottle can stain leather permanently.
Storage between trips. Stuff the empty bag lightly with paper or a cloth so it keeps its shape, and keep it in a breathable dust bag. Condition the leather every few months with a leather conditioner to stop it drying out.
Protecting your valuables. On long journeys, keep your passport, tickets and cash in a separate wallet rather than loose inside the bag. A long wallet holds folded papers and notes flat, and it is easy to find quickly at a check-in counter or ticket booth.

FAQs
What size leather travel bag do I need?
For trips of two to four days, a 40 to 50 litre duffle or weekender is enough for most people. Choose a smaller bag for overnight trips and a holdall or a suitcase for anything longer than five days.
How much does a genuine leather travel bag cost in Bangladesh?
Genuine leather travel bags from Bangladeshi sellers usually cost between ৳5,000 and ৳12,000. Larger bags and bags with heavier leather or better hardware cost more.
Is a leather duffle under ৳2,000 real leather?
Rarely. A full-size duffle needs a lot of hide, and the leather alone usually costs more than that. Bags at this price are most often PU, so check the material line on the listing and the bag itself.
Is a leather travel bag too heavy for flying?
It can be heavier than a nylon bag, so check your airline’s weight limit. A soft leather duffle with light hardware is usually fine for cabin travel, but a large holdall may push you over a strict limit.
How do I stop my leather travel bag getting mouldy?
Empty and air the bag after every trip, store it somewhere dry with air flow, and avoid sealing it in plastic. Wipe off any mould spots early with a dry cloth before they spread.
Final thoughts
The best leather travel bag is one that fits how you actually travel. Pick the size for your usual trip, check the handles, base, zip and lining, and read the material line before you pay. A well-made bag costs more at first, but it will carry you through far more journeys than a cheaper one that tears after a season.
