In Bangladesh, almost every leather product is sold as “original leather”, from a ৳300 wallet at a street stall to a ৳5,000 bag online. Many of them aren’t. PU, rexine and bonded leather can look convincing in photos and even in your hand for the first few seconds.
This guide shows you how to identify real leather on the products you actually buy (wallets, belts, bags, shoes and jackets), plus the red flags to watch for when shopping online.
Quick Answer: How Do You Know If Leather Is Real?
Check five things:
- Edges: real leather edges look fibrous or are smoothly burnished. Fake leather shows a fabric layer or a clean plastic edge.
- Back side: real leather has a suede-like, fibrous back. PU usually shows woven fabric.
- Grain: real leather has an uneven, natural pattern. Fake leather repeats the same pattern.
- Smell: real leather smells natural. PU smells of plastic or chemicals.
- Feel and wrinkles: real leather feels warm and wrinkles naturally when pressed. PU feels cold and stiff.
The 5 Core Checks (Quick Recap)
We cover these tests in detail in our guide to PU leather vs genuine leather. Here’s the short version you can use in a shop.

1. Look at the edges
Real leather edges show tightly packed fibres or a smooth, dyed and burnished finish. PU and rexine edges often show a thin plastic layer on top of fabric, or a perfectly uniform painted edge that peels.
2. Check the back side
Turn the item over or look inside a pocket. Real leather’s underside is slightly rough and fibrous. A woven fabric backing means PU or rexine.
3. Study the grain
Natural leather has small variations, pores and tiny marks. If the pattern looks printed or repeats perfectly, it’s likely synthetic or heavily corrected.
4. Smell it
Real leather has a rich, natural smell. A strong plastic or chemical smell is a warning sign.
5. Press and bend
Press your thumb into the surface. Real leather wrinkles softly and recovers. Synthetic leather dents unevenly or doesn’t wrinkle at all.
How to Check a Leather Wallet
Wallets are the most commonly faked leather item in Bangladesh.
Check inside the card slots
Look at the cut edges of the card slots. Fabric threads or a shiny plastic edge mean PU.
Look at the stitching
Real leather wallets usually have tight, even stitching. Loose or glued seams suggest a low-quality product, whatever the material.
Feel the fold
Fold and unfold it a few times. Real leather bends smoothly. PU can show white stress lines at the fold.
Read the label carefully
“Genuine leather” can mean a lower grade, and “PU leather” or “vegan leather” means synthetic. Learn what each label means in our guide to the types of leather.

How to Check a Leather Belt
Look at the holes
Real leather around the holes shows fibres and stays firm. Fake belts often crack or peel around the holes after a few weeks.
Check the edge layers
Many cheap belts are layered: a thin leather or PU top glued onto cardboard or bonded material. If you see distinct layers at the edge, it’s not solid leather.
Bend the tip
Real leather bends smoothly and doesn’t crack. A belt that creases sharply or shows white lines is likely synthetic.

How to Check Leather Bags, Shoes and Jackets

Bags
Check inside the bag where the lining meets the leather. Real leather bags often show the fibrous underside at seams and handles. Heavy, plastic-feeling handles are a warning sign.
Shoes
Look inside the shoe and at the sole edge. Many shoes use leather uppers with synthetic linings, which is normal. But if the upper creases into sharp cracks rather than soft wrinkles, it’s probably PU.
Jackets
Real leather jackets are heavier and feel softer and warmer. Check the inside at the cuffs or collar for the leather’s underside. Very lightweight, shiny jackets at low prices are usually PU.
Red Flags When Buying Leather Online in Bangladesh
Online sellers, Facebook pages and marketplaces make it harder to check leather by hand. Watch for:
- “100% original leather” at a price that’s too low. Real leather has a real cost.
- Only edited or catalogue photos. Ask for a real photo of the edge and the back side.
- No mention of the leather type. Good sellers say whether it’s cowhide, goat leather, full grain or top grain.
- No exchange option. If you can’t return a fake, the risk is all yours.
- Vague answers. If a seller can’t tell you what the inside or the edges look like, be careful.
What to check at delivery
If you pay cash on delivery, check the product before accepting it if the courier allows: look at the edges, the back side and the smell. Keep the packaging until you’re sure.
Real vs Fake Leather: Quick Comparison
| Check | Real leather | PU / rexine / bonded |
|---|---|---|
| Edges | Fibrous or smooth burnished | Fabric layer or painted plastic |
| Back side | Suede-like fibres | Woven fabric |
| Grain | Uneven, natural | Uniform, printed |
| Smell | Natural, rich | Plastic or chemical |
| Feel | Warm, soft, flexible | Cold, stiff, slippery |
| Ageing | Softens, develops patina | Cracks and peels |
| Price | Higher | Much lower |
Tests You Should Avoid
You may hear about the fire test or soaking leather in water. Don’t do them on a product you want to keep, or in a shop. They can damage the item and aren’t reliable on finished or coated leather. The visual and touch checks above are safer and good enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check original leather at home?
Look at the edges and back side, study the grain, smell it, and press it to see how it wrinkles. Real leather shows fibres, natural variation and a natural smell.
Is “genuine leather” the same as original leather?
It is real leather, but the “genuine leather” label is often used for lower-grade split leather. Full grain and top grain are higher quality.
How can I tell if a leather wallet is real?
Check the cut edges inside the card slots, the stitching and the fold. Fabric threads or white stress lines at the fold usually mean PU.
Does real leather peel?
Real leather doesn’t peel. If the surface peels in flakes, it’s PU, bonded leather or a coated split.
Is rexine real leather?
No. Rexine is a synthetic material, usually fabric coated with plastic, made to look like leather.
How do I avoid fake leather when buying online?
Ask for real photos of the edges and back, check that the seller names the leather type, compare prices, and buy from sellers with clear exchange policies.
Buy Leather With Confidence
You don’t need special tools to identify real leather. A few seconds checking the edges, back side, grain and smell will tell you most of what you need to know. When shopping online, ask questions and buy from sellers who are open about what they sell.
