Handmade leather in Bangladesh
Every Rey handmade piece is cut, woven, and stitched by hand here in Bangladesh. The leather is full cowhide. Because a person makes each one, no two come out the same. The weave sits a little differently and the colour shifts from piece to piece. That is what you are paying for.
How Rey handmade leather is made
- Full cowhide leather, with no PU or bonded layer underneath.
- A pati weave, the same over and under pattern used in Bangladeshi shital pati (শীতল পাটি) mats.
- Saddle-stitched by hand with waxed thread, so one broken stitch will not unravel the row.
- Packed in a gift box.
- Cash on delivery anywhere in the country.
Handmade next to machine-made
| Point | Handmade leather (Rey) | Machine-made leather |
|---|---|---|
| Stitching | Hand saddle-stitch that holds even if one stitch breaks | Machine lock-stitch that can unravel |
| Material | Full cowhide leather | Often PU or bonded leather |
| Each piece | Slightly different, one of a kind | Identical, mass produced |
| Lifespan | Years with basic care | Often three to five years |
Who buys handmade leather
Most buyers are office workers, students, and people shopping for a men's gift. A handmade piece works well for Eid, a birthday, an anniversary, or a wedding, and since each one is slightly different, it does not feel like an off-the-shelf present.
